How to Fight Seasonal Allergies

While it’s beautiful to see trees grow and flowers bloom in the springtime, this season also brings high levels of pollen as the tiny grains are released into the air to fertilize plants. This can trigger allergies, colds and even asthmatic reactions in both children and adults.

In this post, HVAC repair and maintenance expert Acker Heating & Cooling shares top tips for preventing seasonal allergies from getting the best of you.

  • Regularly change your air filters. Experts recommend replacing the air filters in your heating and air conditioning system at least once every three months. Air filters are responsible for filtering pollen, dust, pet dander and other allergens out of the air that you and your family breathe.
  • Consider installing an air purifier. A whole-home air purifier keeps the air in your home fresh by sanitizing it, allowing you to have good indoor air quality. It also helps minimize the risk of health complications caused by indoor pollutants, which can trigger respiratory infections. This is the opposite of oil diffusers and humidifiers, which release particles into the indoor air. Air purifiers are particularly beneficial in the homes of allergy sufferers.
  • Regulate indoor humidity. Dry air can trigger allergy symptoms because it dries up your sinuses. While it can be tricky to determine the most suitable humidity level for you and your family, higher humidity is more comfortable on the throat and nasal passages. If the air is too dry in your home, installing a humidifier can easily solve this problem.
  • Strengthen your immune system. What you put into your body is as important as the quality of air you breathe. Include fresh produce and probiotic-rich food like yogurt in your diet. Ginger and turmeric are also great for alleviating seasonal allergies.
