When Is the Best Time to Replace Your HVAC System?

There are a number of reasons to replace your HVAC system. If you have an old system, for example, it might not be as energy efficient as newer, ENERGY STAR-compliant models. As a result, it may be affecting your indoor air quality.

Newer HVAC systems are much more energy efficient. They also run more quietly, and many often come with advanced features, one of which gives you the ability to control it with an app on your smartphone. Such smart features can also include alerts for maintenance or filter replacements.

Another sign that it’s time to replace your old HVAC system is if you notice that you’re spending more on repairs and maintenance than you used to. If this is the case, it might be more cost-effective for the long-term to purchase a new HVAC system and get rid of an old one that frequently breaks down.

Replace your HVAC system during the off season.

From late September to the middle of November and again from the beginning of March to mid-May are the best times to replace your aging HVAC equipment with a newer, better unit. Spring and fall are the seasons you’re not as likely to need heating, and temperatures tend to be mild enough that your home won’t feel like an oven while the technicians are installing your new system.

If you schedule the work during the summer months, the heat could be unbearable without air conditioning. It’s also very unpleasant for the installers to work at this time, especially when they have to install the outdoor unit.

In the winter, it can be extremely uncomfortable, and sometimes even unsafe, to go without heating even for a few hours. In areas that receive a lot of snow, installing an outdoor unit in the winter can be extra challenging.

Why Spring & Fall Are Off-Seasons

Most people need the services of an HVAC professional in the summer and winter because they still don’t appreciate the importance of regular maintenance. When an HVAC system isn’t properly maintained, it’s more likely to break down when used frequently.

In addition to the higher number of customers who call during the summer and winter, it’s also more challenging for an HVAC technician to work during these seasons, so labor charges are naturally higher. Fewer people call technicians in the spring and fall, so you have a better chance of getting the schedule you really want and paying less.

This is true not just for HVAC replacement, but also for other HVAC-related jobs, such as air duct sealing and HVAC equipment cleaning.
