Spring – is there any more beautiful time of the year? We get to put away all of our warm winter coats and start enjoying the sunny, balmy days. There is a downside to all of this lovely warm weather, though. Sometimes it can be too hot to handle, which is why you need to make sure that your air conditioning unit is in tip-top shape before you need it during those warmer days.
Get Your AC System Spring Ready!
Fortunately, getting your air conditioner ready for warm weather is usually a simple matter of performing a few basic maintenance tasks.
If it’s been a while since you had a professional look over the system, it could pay to have the spring maintenance done by a HVAC technician. Our expert team here at Acker Heating & Cooling is ready to help! If you’d prefer to handle it yourself though, there are a few steps you can take:
Start with a Programmable Thermostat
Think about how often you’re going to be inside when the weather is warmer. Are you likely to enjoy a picnic when the weather outside is sunny, or maybe play catch with the kids? Most of us will take advantage of the sunny weather.
Outdoor activities are fantastic, but if no one is in your home during the day, it’s a waste of money to keep it cool. By the same token, you don’t want to walk into your house after a hot day and have it feel like an oven.
That’s where a programmable thermostat could be your best friend.
You program exactly:
- When it must come on
- When it must be switched off
- What temperatures to maintain
Say, for example, that everyone is out of the house by 8:00 in the morning, and they get home after 2:00 in the afternoon.
Keeping the air conditioner running from 8:00 to 2:00 would be a waste of electricity, and would also waste money. What you could do instead is to program it to turn off at 7:45. Then you could program it to turn on at 1:30 in the afternoon so that there’s plenty of time to cool down.
Clean off the Coils on the Outside
When you look at your air conditioner, you’ll see a bunch of coils on the outside of the unit. Brush away any debris that might have accumulated in and between these coils. We’d recommend rechecking these every month or so to make sure they stay clear.
Keeping this area clean is essential to ensure that the system works as efficiently as possible.
Change the Filters
How often you change your system’s filters depends on the area where you live and how much dust they’re subjected to. Changing your filters as part of your spring check is the bare minimum. You should, in fact, check the filters quarterly to see how clogged they are.
A clogged filter is one of the leading causes of inefficiency in an HVAC system. Do yourself a favor and change them regularly. The extra money that you spend on the filters will soon be recouped by saving on energy costs.
