How Redirecting Air Vents Can Improve HVAC Efficiency

An effective heating and cooling system in a home is overlooked unless it malfunctions or costs the homeowner a lot of money. If you want to maximize comfort and improve the efficiency of your HVAC unit, redirecting your air vents will do the trick. In this article, our indoor air quality experts at Acker Heating & Cooling discuss how this can happen.

Controlling Airflow in the Duct System

If you have a specific room that doesn’t need airflow, you can simply close the vent. This allows the treated air to circulate back to the duct system and into other spaces in your home. To limit or block airflow, installing vent deflectors is a simple solution. If you have a steel vent grille, install a magnetic vent cover to create a better seal over your vents. Make sure, however, that no more than 10 percent of your air vents are closed at the same time, as this will create excess air pressure in the duct system. This can result in air leakage and damage to your system’s components, according to HVAC repair and maintenance specialists.

Controlling Airflow in Rooms

While standard vent covers prevent drafts and shield your ducts from dust and debris, they don’t necessarily direct airflow. If uncomfortable drafts are your main concern, installing a vent diffuser can offer the most assistance. When it comes to accurately redirecting vents, a vent deflector is an ideal choice. Place it over the vent to guide air away from a wall, window treatment or other surface and toward the center of the room. A vent extender, on the other hand, helps move more air out from a vent that’s under a piece of furniture.
