The city of Athens is located in Clarke County, Georgia, approximately seventy miles northeast of metropolitan Atlanta. Founded during the 18th century as a trading post on the banks of the Oconee River, Athens-Clarke County was officially incorporated as a consolidated city-county government in January of 1991 and is today home to a population of more than 115,000 permanent residents.
