The city of Athens is located in Clarke County, Georgia, approximately seventy miles northeast of metropolitan Atlanta. Founded during the 18th century as a trading post on the banks of the Oconee River, Athens-Clarke County was officially incorporated as a consolidated city-county government in January of 1991 and is today home to a population of more than 115,000 permanent residents.  The city’s humid subtropical climate graces the region with four beautifully changing seasons each year that include hot summers, moderate winters, and absolutely lovely weather during autumn and spring.

Considered the academic, music, and cultural center of the state, Athens is home to the University of Georgia, Georgia’s flagship institute of higher learning, as well as a host of historic homes, buildings, museums, galleries, and venues dedicated to the performing arts that include the State Botanical Garden of GeorgiaGeorgia Museum of Art, and University of Georgia Performing Arts Center.

History lovers will enjoy touring the city’s numerous historic attractions that include fifteen neighborhoods listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as the Gospel Pilgrim and Jackson Street cemeteries and a number of historic homes and buildings that include the Morton Theater, Taylor-Grady House, and Church-Waddel-Brumby House, home of the Athens Welcome Center.

Athens is known for its lively nightlife and entertainment scene, premier shopping and dining, and host of annual festivals and community events that include AthFest, the city’s signature music and arts festival held each June, and Slingshot, festival of music, electronic arts, and tech, held each March.

Situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Athens’ convenient location at the crossroads of Georgia State Route 72 and U.S. Highways 29, 78, 129, and 441 makes it a great city for living or visiting in Northeastern Georgia!
