Air Handler Problems You Need to Watch Out For

Heating and air conditioning systems have what’s called an air handler. Its job is to manage the delivery of treated air through all your living spaces. It works in conjunction with your home comfort equipment to ensure energy efficiency, minimize wear and tear, improve indoor air quality and reduce monthly utility bills.

Problems associated with this integral component of your HVAC unit can have a dramatic impact on your home. Here’s how to tell if your air handler has issues and needs an immediate inspection and repair.

Damaged fan blades. The fan inside the air handler helps move conditioned air through your home. However, because it’s attached to a moving component, the blades are prone to bending, breaking or becoming loose while in operation. Damaged blades can affect airflow, not to mention the rest of the air handler’s components. One way to tell if you have a damaged fan is if there’s loud banging or rattling noises coming from inside the unit.

Leaking condensate pan. The AC component of residential and commercial HVAC systems has a condensate pan located below the air handler. It catches dripping condensation and carries it safely out of the unit via a drain line. Over time, mold and algae buildup will start to clog the drain line, causing the pan to overflow, which can result in water damage and electrical issues.

A malfunctioning limit switch. The blower fan has what’s called a limit switch that protects the heating system and stops cool air from blowing into your living spaces during the winter months. If this switch fails, the blower may act unpredictably, either running intermittently or constantly. In some cases, the issue could also cause the blower to stop working entirely.

Make sure the components inside the air handler are in good condition. Get in touch with the certified technicians at Acker Heating & Cooling today to schedule in-depth maintenance of your cooling or heating systems. Call (706) 715-2607 or fill out our contact form to request an appointment.
